Application & Hiring Process
You should receive an initial response within a few business days of submitting your application. The full recruitment process—including interviews, testing, background checks, and medical evaluations—typically takes several weeks to a few months, depending on the position and the number of applicants.
The process includes a written exam, physical fitness test (exempt for lateral candidates), oral interview, background investigation, psychological evaluation, EyeDetect Exam, a full medical examination, and finally, the Chief’s selection.
Depending on your location and the stage of the process, travel will be required for at least one visit to complete all phases of testing. The initial phases of the hiring process can all be completed remotely. We’ll provide guidance and support throughout.
Qualifications
Automatic disqualifiers include felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, dishonorable discharge from the military, illegal drug use within a certain timeframe, and falsification of application materials. Marijuana use within one year of application date.
Applicants must:
- Be at least 21 years old
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Hold a valid Alaska driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to hiring
- Have no domestic violence or felony convictions
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Not have consumed marijuana in any form (including edibles) for a minimum of one year prior to your application.
- Meet all physical, mental, and moral standards required by the department and the Alaska Police Standards Council for certification.
Lateral applicants must have a current law enforcement certification and at least one year prior qualifying experience as a civilian sworn police officer.
You must be at least 21 years old to become a certified police officer in Alaska at your time of hire. There is no upper age limit, but applicants must meet the physical and medical requirements of the job regardless of their age.
Facial hair and tattoos are generally permitted, provided they do not interfere with safety equipment or compromise a professional appearance. Visible tattoos must not be offensive or inappropriate.
Training & Equipment
Yes. Officers participate in continuous in-service training to maintain certifications, as well as ongoing opportunities for advanced training to develop new skills and stay current on best practices.
Yes. Officers are eligible for the take-home car program upon completion of the field training program.
The Alaska Law Enforcement Training Academy is located in Sitka, Alaska and lasts approximately 16 weeks and is a live-in academy. All entry-level recruits must attend. Lateral candidates from another state must attend a shorter two-week DPS re-cert academy required for certification. The City of Valdez covers the cost of training, and recruits are paid normal wages while attending.
The department provides all essential duty gear, including uniforms, firearms, body armor, essential equipment and communication devices. Officers are not required to purchase their own equipment. In addition, each officer receives a yearly allowance to purchase specialized gear or duty boots.

Yes. The department offers shift differentials, specialty pay, and ample overtime opportunities including 13.5 paid Holidays. Upon certification by the Alaska Police Standards Council, Officers may also qualify for bi-annual retention incentive payments.

Begin training to meet the physical fitness standards, studying basic law enforcement principles, and maintain high integrity and professionalism throughout the application process. Practicing interview and test-taking skills is also recommended.
Yes, currently the City of Valdez Personnel Regulations require you to live in Valdez. In addition, our department members are strongly encouraged to be involved in our community both on and off duty.
Specialty teams include: Field Training Officers (FTO), School Resource Officer (SRO), Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD – Bomb Squad), and other assignments based on department needs and officer qualifications.
